Injectables and Motherhood: Why It’s Best to Wait During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

At The Aesthetics Collective, we’re proud to empower our clients to feel confident, radiant, and in control of their appearance. But when it comes to injectable treatments—like anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers—pregnancy and breastfeeding bring a unique set of considerations. Understandably, many new and expecting mothers want to look and feel their best, especially during a time when their body is undergoing significant changes. However, when it comes to injectables, medical consensus is clear: it’s safest to wait.

Why Injectables Are Not Recommended During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

Currently, there is insufficient clinical research to confirm the safety of injectable treatments for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals. Most aesthetic treatments—including botulinum toxin (commonly known as Botox) and dermal fillers—have not been ethically tested on pregnant or lactating women, meaning there is no definitive data on how these substances may affect fetal or neonatal development.

Out of an abundance of caution, leading regulatory bodies and aesthetic manufacturers advise against the use of injectables during these times. For example: Botulinum toxin may theoretically cross the placenta or be secreted in breast milk, although evidence is limited. Hyaluronic acid fillers, while naturally occurring in the body, still involve carrier agents and localised trauma to the skin, which may not be advisable during pregnancy when immune responses and hormonal levels fluctuate.

Protecting You and Your Baby

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the body undergoes changes in blood flow, hormone levels, and immune responses. These factors may increase the risk of adverse reactions, swelling, or unpredictable outcomes from injectables. As medical professionals, our priority is always the health and wellbeing of both you and your baby.

When Can I Resume Treatment?

We recommend waiting until:

  • After pregnancy has ended, and

  • Once you are no longer breastfeeding.

This ensures your body has returned to a more stable state hormonally and immunologically. At your postnatal consultation, we’ll carry out a full medical assessment to ensure you’re ready to resume aesthetic treatments safely and confidently.

Our Commitment to Ethical, Patient-Centred Care

At The Aesthetics Collective, we believe aesthetic medicine should always align with your health. We’re committed to offering honest, evidence-informed guidance to help you make the best decisions for your body, your baby, and your future self.
